The fury of a patient nation

takingthefuture
Classical references are the new big thing these days, what with Alexander Boris de Pfeffel Johnson name dropping Ancient Greeks and Romans at every opportunity in a vain attempt to convince us that he’s not merely an expensively educated boor. So here’s a quote from the Roman author Publilius Syrus, which has direct relevance to a Scotland under the thumb of that upper class exercise in artfully tousled arrogance. And it’s this – Cave furorem patientis – beware the fury of the patient one. Scotland is patient. We are patient still. But the anger is rising and our reserves of patience are not infinite.

A more modern savant, Gloria Steinem, said that the truth will set you free, but first it will piss you off. Scotland doesn’t need anger management. It just needs Westminster to stop pissing us off. Since that’s as likely to happen as it is that Boris Johnson will tell us how many children he has or that Michael Gove is going to stop being an oleaginous irritant, we must ensure that the truth that Westminster will always continue to piss Scotland off is directed into the movement to set Scotland free from Westminster. At the moment, we are faced with a Boris Johnson who is doing his utmost to piss Scotland off in the misplaced belief that there’s nothing we can do about it. He is aided in his delusion by a media which is happy to continue to parrot the line that the 2014 referendum was a once in a generation affair after which democracy stopped in Scotland, and which is equally happy to insist that Scotland requires the permission of the UK Prime Minister in order to ask itself about its own future.

There are those within the independence movement who are telling us that we must stay calm, that we must resist anger. They are correct, up to a point. We must indeed avoid the red hot anger of rage that leads to foolish and precipitous choices. We must refrain from allowing our anger to cloud our judgement. Taking action without carefully thinking through the consequences is likely to rebound upon us. Demanding that something be done before the conditions are correct isn’t going to help us achieve our goal of an independent Scotland. It will merely play into the hands of the smirking tousled liar.

However not all anger is the anger of rage, of rash decisions taken in the heat of the moment. Not all anger is ill-considered or a knee-jerk response to a provocation. There is a cold anger, a controlled anger, an anger which burns like ice, an anger which is carefully directed and aimed with precision, an anger which carefully and patiently bides its time until it is unleashed in a tidal wave of calculated and appropriate revenge. That anger is a careful anger, a considered anger, a proportionate and determined anger. That second kind of anger is the one that the Scottish independence movement needs to cultivate. That second kind of anger is the one that Pubilius Syrus warned about all those many centuries ago. His lesson still holds today.

So it is not a matter of calming down. It is good and proper, it is a moral imperative, to rage rage against the lying of the right. However it’s a matter of controlling one’s rage and directing it into a productive channel, so that when the rage is finally released it will have the correct effect and will be aimed squarely and directly at its proper target. That kind of anger is effective and productive anger. It is positive anger. Anger is an energy that we can channel into our campaigning, a fuel that will drive us through the bullshit and lies that Westminster and its allies will throw at us, but only if we contain it, direct it, and channel it properly, otherwise it’s wasted in an explosion of impotence. A carefully considered anger is the motivating force that will see the independence movement triumph.

There are going to be plenty more provocations in the weeks and months ahead. They are intentional. The Tories want us to lose control, to explode in an impotent and useless fury that will only damage our own cause. They want us to lose our own battle, because then they won’t have to campaign to protect their privilege. We must remain resolute in refusing to accept that Westminster has a right to veto Scotland’s inalienable right to self-determination, and we must direct our righteous anger at their proddings and provocations into campaigning, canvassing, protesting, marching.

However campaigning all the harder in the face of a repeated no is not going to be enough. Eventually there will come a time when ultimatums must be made, challenges put, and Westminster’s dictats must be faced down. If Boris Johnson refuses to concede that Scotland has provided the SNP with a clear and unequivocal mandate for another independence referendum, there must be immediate steps to a legal challenge to establish the lawfulness of a referendum without a Section 30 order. The leadership of the SNP must demonstrate that they’re not going to accept that denial of Scotland’s inalienable right by simply accepting that they must campaign harder and win yet more mandates that can be ignored.

Secondly, the SNP leadership must be resolute in calling out anti-independence parties and a media which routinely refer to such a referendum as illegal or wildcat when the only legal fact right now is that no one knows what the legal status of such a referendum would be. It needs to be tested in the courts first. The Scottish Government must ensure that the British Government understands that its permission is not required, but rather that agreeing to a Section 30 order is the only hope in hell that so-called Unionists have of proving that Scotland is indeed a partner in a union. Do not confuse our politeness with weakness.

Finally the wider movement must start to build toward using the 2021 Holyrood election not as a means to provide yet another mandate for a referendum to put on the mantlepiece along with all the other mandates for a referendum that the SNP already possesses. We must start to operate on the assumption that in 2021 we will be fighting an election based upon securing a mandate for independence itself. Because Westminster and the international community cannot ignore that election, the anti-independence parties can’t boycott it, local authorities controlled by the Tories or Labour can’t refuse to facilitate it. This is not Spain. We will fight that election campaign against British nationalist opponents who will have proven that Scotland is in their eyes not a partner in a union, but a possession that can be dictated to. We will fight that election campaign against opponents who have already lost the moral and democratic argument.

Above all, what we must do is to respond to Boris Johnson’s refusals with a determination that displays the unshakeable conviction that whether Scotland has its say on its own future is not for Boris Johnson to decide. The future of our country is not his gift to give. It is for us to take. It’s not so much a question of how cautious or bold the SNP leadership is, but how bold we are. Our determined anger is what will see us through. Boris Johnson should beware our fury, because it will be calculated, cold, and tightly focussed. Beware the fury of a patient nation.

Paul…I’m just in from shovelling snow, cold, dark outside, and read the line above.
I laughed loudly, thanks for brightening up a “ bleak mid winter morn”!

Also thanks for the rest of the post, you keep me sane!

    Hugs

    • To which add “rage rage against the lying of the right” – thank you, Paul (and Dylan Thomas) for that – appreciated, recorded, and shamelessly co-opted.

    • Alison Neave says:

And the most masterful description of Michael Gove I have ever seen “oleaginous irritant”. Masterful.

  2. Achmony says:

I watch the Scottish Parliament sittings with seething anger and dismay. Why is it inhabited by so-called unionists, Labour, Tory and Libdems’ whose sole purpose is to denigrate and abuse the wish of the Scottish people. Why are they elected? OK! I know that the Labour party gerrymandered the rules for membership of Holyrood at the very beginning in 1997 in order to limit the likelyhood of the SNP ever getting into power, and introduced the seriously complicated and supposed proportional voting system that produces almost half of the members as non-elected ‘list’ msps’. Because of this system’ it is almost impossible for the successful SNP to gain any traction from the ‘list’. Stu Campbell proposed that SNP voters could, in future Holyrood elections, vote for a new independence party to hover up their second-choice votes and displace those cretinous individuals who now occupy half of the sitting. I think this is a proposal that is worth investigating. Discuss!

    • crabbitgits says:

Doesn’t one exist already? Think it’s called The Scottish Green Party.

      • Wee Chid says:

Who themselves have pissed off too many people to be relevant. To be honest i think if we have to wait until after 2021 then it’s game over. Holyrood will have been dissoved long before then.

    • Petra says:

A new independence party run by someone like Leslie Riddoch, who’s considering doing so, makes sense to me. The ”other” would be totally detrimental to our cause overall, imo

    • A.Bruce says:

4 days ago on the 19th, Gordon Ross of “In-D-Car Gordon Ross” fame had Pat Lee in the car and were discussing this very issue. Pat put out the call that all politicians should put their differences aside and come together behind the one issue of a new party. He’s saying the first vote should be for the SNP and the second a List vote for a pro indy party. Everyone should get around the table and discuss.
He wants to hear what you think. The contact is Peoples Party Facebook Page.

  3. Craig Fraser says:

Hi WGD,Spot one. My late father always said “beware the temper of a patient man” this is exactly the point you make. Also if ABDJ comes to Scotland asking for legislative consent over powers where EU agreement bill changes devolved powers, does that not break the union again? Regards Craig

As always inspired by your mastery of language.

At the present time with so much in the melting pot the message is very necessary.

“We must indeed avoid the red hot anger of rage that leads to foolish and precipitous choices.

There is a cold anger, a controlled anger, an anger which burns like ice. . . .
. . . until it is unleashed in a tidal wave of calculated and appropriate revenge.”

    Stirring stuff Paul.

Yesterday I was at the new Destiny hub in Perth for a great afternoon of craic with like minded souls. Not to mention mulled wine by Kev the Bev and mince pies and other sweetmeats, we had choral singing of ‘edited’ christmas carols led by Indy Lindy.

All in all it looks like we’re in for a really ‘Guid New Year’ for Albanach independistas.

I sense the tidal wave is building. There’s going to be an indy tsunami.

  5. Welsh Sion says:

Seems your quotation is also applied by the Irish, as:

    “Coimhéad fearg fhear na foighde”

    http://www.compassrose.org/folklore/irish/Irish-Proverbs-Gaelic.html

And, yes, I know, the point in using a Latin source was to throw the remark back specifically at LBJ.

    (Can’t say I’ve found – yet – a Welsh equivalent).

  6. emegra says:

Unless I’m reading it wrong sounds Paul like you’ve already given up on an indyref in 2020

  7. One_Scot says:

Great read. Your drive and spirit has made me feel slightly better about things.

  8. Lisa Smith says:

Another great inspirational article Paul,Scotland certainly is the patient one!…Here’s to measured, effective control of our justified anger, resulting in a long overdue and now vital Indy result in 2020, or soon thereafter.

    • Bob Lamont says:

      👍
      An excellent synopsis…

    • Petra says:

Thanks for the link WS. I see that Kirsty Strickland is reiterating what Paul is saying too.

,,”You get the sense that some are hoping for supporters of independence to lose their cool in this moment. Civil disobedience would be a gift for the prime minister and his well-heeled cabinet. His understanding of Scotland relies on outdated stereotypes, so imagine the pleasure he would feel in condemning the rough, uncivil Scots for their thuggery. The sizable proportion of the Scottish population who support independence are too canny to fall into that trap. While the anger felt is real and growing, it is also recognised that indyref2 is not a case of if, but when.”..

So yes let’s just keep the heid. We’re now in the end game and have an example to set if we want to win over the soft No’s.

      • They’d love to rebrand us as ‘tartan terrorists’.
But the again we won’t be sitting on the pavement arms folded as thugs in uniform batter us about the head with batons either.
        We are nearly there, guys.
Have a few days away from all of this and cuddle those close to you, and even, the odd stranger.
Duggers, consider yourselves cuddled by yours truly.
        Have a great one!

  9. Brilliant Writing Paul..A Very refreshing read Thanks..Merry Christmas to you both

  10. Well done ,Paul
Your ice cold update of Howard Beale’s rant in ‘Network’.

“I don’t have to tell you things are bad. Everybody knows things are bad. It’s a depression. Everybody’s out of work or scared of losing their job. The dollar buys a nickel’s worth. Banks are going bust. Shopkeepers keep a gun under the counter. Punks are running wild in the street and there’s nobody anywhere who seems to know what to do, and there’s no end to it. We know the air is unfit to breathe and our food is unfit to eat, and we sit watching our TVs while some local newscaster tells us that today we had fifteen homicides and sixty-three violent crimes, as if that’s the way it’s supposed to be.
We know things are bad — worse than bad. They’re crazy. It’s like everything everywhere is going crazy, so we don’t go out anymore. We sit in the house, and slowly the world we are living in is getting smaller, and all we say is: ‘Please, at least leave us alone in our living rooms. Let me have my toaster and my TV and my steel-belted radials and I won’t say anything. Just leave us alone.’
Well, I’m not gonna leave you alone. I want you to get MAD! I don’t want you to protest. I don’t want you to riot — I don’t want you to write to your congressman, because I wouldn’t know what to tell you to write. I don’t know what to do about the depression and the inflation and the Russians and the crime in the street. All I know is that first you’ve got to get mad. [shouting] You’ve got to say: ‘I’m a human being, god-dammit! My life has value!’
So, I want you to get up now. I want all of you to get up out of your chairs. I want you to get up right now and go to the window. Open it, and stick your head out, and yell: I’M AS MAD AS HELL, AND I’M NOT GOING TO TAKE THIS ANYMORE!
I want you to get up right now. Sit up. Go to your windows. Open them and stick your head out and yell – ‘I’m as mad as hell and I’m not gonna take this anymore!’ Things have got to change. But first, you’ve gotta get mad!…You’ve got to say, I’M AS MAD AS HELL, AND I’M NOT GOING TO TAKE THIS ANYMORE! Then we’ll figure out what to do about the depression and the inflation and the oil crisis. But first, get up out of your chairs, open the window, stick your head out, and yell, and say it: I’M AS MAD AS HELL, AND I’M NOT GOING TO TAKE THIS ANYMORE! ”

They confuse our civility for submissiveness.
They confuse our quiet dignity for subservience.
They confuse our patience with helplessness.

Inwardly, we are as mad as hell, and we are not going to take any more.

    • mumsyhugs says:

Wow! Those last few lines are absolutely spot on! Get them on billboards and car stickers!

    • vanilla icke says:

That’s ‘Network’ added to the pile of movies I must watch again, as soon as possible!
      thanks for that!
And Paul, for someone supposed to be honeymooning, you’re filling this blog with fresh inspiration. I first came across the saying, “beware the vengeance of the patient man” in Chris Brookmyre’s ‘Where the bodies are buried’. I was awfy impressed at the time, but hadn’t connected it to our struggle.
As has been said already, we’re in the endgame. Our enemies are frightened because they know their entire system is on a shoogly peg.
      Our time has come.

  11. David Agnew says:

Use that anger. Direct it right at them. We should aim to rock their cozy little union to its foundations. Relentless mockery and disrespect for what they hold dear. As Mark Twain said, only Laughter can a colossal humbug to rags and atoms at a blast. Against the assault of laughter, nothing can stand. Johnson thinks he’s popular, he doesn’t like booed. But he will lose his shit if he is simply reduced to a figure of fun. Mock him. Mock his party. Mock his union. Mock all his little unionist friends in the BBC. Mock Labour. Mock the Lib dems. Give them nothing but contempt and scant regard. Rip the absolute pish out of them.

  12. benmadigan says:

Patrick Pearse, leader of the Irish 1916 Rising said in 1915 “I say to my people’s masters: … Beware of the thing that is coming, beware of the risen people, who shall take what ye would not give”.

  13. The Scottish Government could bring the election forward to 2020. The Scottish Government already moved the election from 2020 to 2021 to ensure our election wouldn’t clash with the expected UK General Election in 2020.
The UK General election was scheduled to be at the end of a fixed term parliament which should have lasted from 2015 to 2020. However, in this time there has been two extra General Elections thereby eliminating the original requirement for the Scottish Government to move the election to 2021. So, why don’t we move it back to 2020?
We could have our GE in September on the same day as Indyref2. Or, we could have the GE in May and Indyref2 in September. Both of these options are up for discussion.
Both dates are of course are after we are no longer members of the EU. We are no longer EU citizens. Although, this event may have been expected for some time, it is still going to be an earthquake moment and a highly likely mind changing event for a lot soft No voters.
Also, whereas the EU will not involve itself in the internal politics of member states, eg Catalonia, when the UK leaves, there is no longer any need or requirement to hold itself in check. The EU is then free to comment on Scotland’s situation.
This Section 30 order, which many minds are focused on, is simply an agreement whereby the UK agree to accept the result of a referendum and recognise the legitimacy of an independent Scotland. This in turn allow other countries throughout the world to recognise an independent Scotland.
However, the EU has far more clout than the UK. If the EU give us recognition as to a referendum, then this would legitimise an independent Scotland in the same way. Even more so, as the EU is a much bigger hitter on the world stage than the UK.
    Thoughts?

  14. Spot on. Mockery is something that Corbyn and the other Labour politicians have never tried. Probably, because they don’t have the wit.
Alex Salmond was a master and new MP Alyn Smith could torture Johnson with his quick wit. There’s certainly plenty of ammunition.

  15. carolclark1 says:

Another excellent piece Paul. Cold anger, yes I’m a great believer in that, and I’m told I’m good at it too. So yes, it’s there and building nicely.

However, since the election, I’ve been very calm, and given myself time off to enjoy the festive with family and friends. I reckon that we have all earned it. Relax, enjoy and recharge the batteries.

Come January 11th, the walking boots and the Saltire are ready. There’s quite a few of us from doon here in darkest Dumfries & Galloway hoping to be with you for the march.

Until then, to Paul and Peter, and all the folks here on the blog, Merry Christmas.

  16. Red squirrel says:

The constant bitter sniping from the unionists is very wearing but cold, patient and controlled fury is something that sits well in the Scots’ psyche. I’ll take Burns’ observation of it from Tam O’ Shanter “nursing her wrath to keep it warm”.

I’m keeping note of each and every lie, dismissal, disrespect and derision. That forge of anger will be white hot and ready to go when the time is right. It will be used when and where it’s needed 😁

  17. Bob Lamont says:

Superbly put Paul, revenge is best served cold…

  18. Mark Russell says:

“Nemo me inpune lacessit”. Just to embroider for Rees Mogg’s benefit. Powerful words, Paul. Much more than the sword. Have a good break..

  19. diabloandco says:

Yes Paul , but hell , it’s hard!

  20. Golfnut says:

A fine article and mirrors my personal experience amongst friends and family, they are past hoping, way past hoping, its now let’s make this happen.
I read a few words some weeks back which perhaps illustrate what I mean.

    I don’t want your opinion.
I’m not asking for your permission.
I just need you to get out of the way.

    Have a great Christmas everyone.

  21. bringiton says:

BoJo and his right wing cabal would do well to take a lesson from fairly recent events in Ireland.
Blocking the democratic route to satisfy peoples’ aspirations will have undesirable consequences for them.
We Scots may be slow to change but absolutely will not lie down and let England’s Tories trample us into submission.

  22. Craig P says:

I’m not angry now, that was maybe true ten years ago but now, the union’s dead and just doesn’t know it. But this:

    >>rage against the lying of the right

    Brilliant.

  23. Malky McBlain says:

I eagerly await the next set of opinion polling on independence. My money is on a significant leap above 50% for yes as shown in previous opinion polls. The general election result was one thing but a denial of a mandate will galvanise not further polarise the population. The more they say no the more they will anger the people.

The facts are that The SNP have very cleverly wedged the unionists. They have been backed into a corner and know that they have no where to go except to back down and allow Scotland’s voice to be heard. The only other thing they can do is to move to close down our democracy and mothball our parliament. They know that doing that will exponentially increase the movement for independence. They are in a lose lose situation and they know it. I have to take my hat off to the SNP leadership in the way they have brought us to this point. Very skilful politics from a very intelligent and purposeful government.

    • barpe says:

Agree completely with what you say, I think, unlike some other ‘indy blogs’, that the SNP have played it correctly.

I’m not sure about the ‘opinion polls’, as I’m a firm believer they are rigged ( by known choices of respondents) to get results they want.

But the dam will break before long anyway, regardless.
Happy Xmas to all, and bring it on (as Wendy said!) in 2020

  24. Patience is a Virtue says:

Well played Kirsten Oswald on the radio – explaining what a Mandate is and what Democracy is to the hard of understanding – more of the same please- and let’s use the Scottish Parliament to improve the lot of all in Scotland, as is most unlikely there will be favourable winds from the South. Winter is here.

  25. Cubby says:

I don’t remember Cameron being told by the Britnats he needed multiple election wins and multiple mandates to proceed with his EU referendum when he won with 36% of the vote in the 2015 referendum.

Britnats just change the rules/raise the bar after the election. Its called gerrymandering. How many elections and mandates are required – the Britnats won’t even say. What a bunch of undemocratic chancers.

Bring forward the Scot parliament election from 2021 to 2020 instead of the referendum if Johnson digs his heels in. Majority vote for independence parties in constiuency vote = independence.

    • Petra says:

From 2021 to 2020? Maybe the way to go Cubby? Maybe Nicola Sturgeon’s Plan B?

      • Cubby says:

700 years on from the Declaration of Arbroath would be a pretty apt time to win independence and as someone else once said “take back control”.

        • Welsh Sion says:

Here you go, Cubby. 700 years on:

“Because, while a hundred of us remain alive and posting on Wee Ginger Dug and other true, pro-indy blogs, we will not submit in the slightest measure, to the domination of the English. We do not fight for honour, riches, or glory, but solely for freedom which no true man or woman gives up but with his or her life.”

    • Legerwood says:

There were a couple of articles in the papers over the weekend suggesting Boris might suddenly turn round and announce indyref2 completely against the run of play. Shroud waving? Maybe. But on the other hand it would not be out of character for him to change direction like that.

      Worth bearing in mind.

The SNP have to be ready for all eventualities.

  26. Fermerfaefufe says:

So…if Bojo is insistant on refusing section 30, I wouldn’t even bother with the courts.
If Lesley Riddoch or such like sets up a new party say YES SCOTLAND and the SNP and Greens agree not to fight the list vote at HR in 2021 and run the list vote as a quasi Indyref with a YES SCOTLAND mandate for negotiating Independence.
    3 things would happen
    1) Penny would drop that unionist parties could not stop or boycott it.
    2) Even if 51 % wasnt reached the unionist parties would be wiped out almost or reduced at best to lib dems levels as half the list seats would go to YES combined with all the SNP constituency MSPs – maybe James Kelly could tell us how exactly it would figure …
    3) Boris would realise that there would be a fair chance he could lose the vote full stop & even if YES didnt get 51% he would be dealing with a Scottish Parliament with a super majority with hardly any Tory representation.
I SUSPECT FACED WUTH THAT PROSPECT HE WOULD CAVE IN AND OFFER AN INDYREF IN 2020.

We have to put him under pressure to submit to the Current mandate and not just wait on it happening !!

  27. Malky McBlain says:

Petra this is a very important point re Quebec. However there remains a big difference between Quebec’s situation and Scotland. That difference is that it will be the Scottish Parliament’s responsibility to set the question and decide on the timing. Quebec is a province in a federation Scotland is a country in a union. The Question the Québécois were posed was loaded by the Federal govt in Ottawa and designed to fail. This doesn’t mean that we shouldn’t expect the unexpected. We are in a game with a very desperate and ruthless player. I certainly hope that the SNP are strategising all possible scenarios. I just hope they are doing it covertly with trusted stakeholders. MI5 will know well ahead the SNP’s plans. They will have moles on the inside for sure. Call me conspiratorial and alarmist but the reality is that this is a very very high stakes game and we are up against a very formidable and perfidious opponent. We certainly do have to expect the unexpected.

    • Petra says:

Agree Malky totally different situations, however A Tickell may have a point when he attempts to predict what Governments resort to to stymie the opposition, based on, in this case, a Quebec precedent, and therefore what the loose cannon, LBJ, may do next.

In saying that I think that most of us on here know that the Tory cabal will have been / is sitting at the round table, along with a vast array of experts from every imaginable field, making their plans for Scotland.

And we only have to study colonial history to know what they’re capable of getting up to. Stop at nothing.

    • Matt McCallum says:

I totally agree with you Malky.

If the British security services can get moles into the IRA they can certainly do it with the Scottish Government and to think otherwise would be totally Naïve.

It’s my opinion that most, or at least some, of the infighting that’s occurring in the indy movement at the minute is being orchestrated by the unseen hand of the British state.

  28. Fermerfaefufe says:

And the other thing Scotgov and SNP mps should be doing is shouting long and loud to the EU or any other country Bojo is trying to get a fee trade agreement with that Scotlands resources WILL NOT be on the table and an independent Scotland will reclaim them and any agreement involving them will be Null and Void.
Keep putting a spoke into Borises trade negotiations and put doubts in the minds of prospective trade partners.
HE MIGHT THEN BE GLAD IF INDYREF TO END THE UNCERTAINTY !!

  29. Petra says:

Boris Johnston the Hedgies bestest pal.

  30. Julia Gibb says:

If we are going with the highbrow approach…Cicero summed up the Scottish branch of Labour 2050years ago.

“A nation can survive its fools, and even the ambitious. But it cannot survive treason from within. An enemy at the gates is less formidable, for he is known and carries his banner openly. But the traitor moves amongst those within the gate freely, his sly whispers rustling through all the alleys, heard in the very halls of government itself. For the traitor appears not a traitor; he speaks in accents familiar to his victims, and he wears their face and their arguments, he appeals to the baseness that lies deep in the hearts of all men. He rots the soul of a nation, he works secretly and unknown in the night to undermine the pillars of the city, he infects the body politic so that it can no longer resist. A murderer is less to fear.

    Cicero – circa 45BC

Nice one Julia, that deserves 3 saltires 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿

    • Petra says:

Thanks for that Julia and I reckon that it applies to more than just the Scottish branch office of the Labour Party. Sad to say, imo, some are even closer to home now.

  31. Macart says:

Johnson’s approach to all things Scottish has been a tad on the predictable side. Ignorant, arrogant and absolutely patronising. He’s a walking (lounging) stereotype. His greatest error is believing his own myth. His next? That’d be confusing a population’s frustration for impotent or helpless anger.

Regardless of forewarnings, and possibly a smidge of self-awareness, he’ll make the error anyway. It’s who he is.

  32. Luigi says:

When we feel frustrated with the slow pace of movement toward independence, remember that this is not a conventional battle. No need for a highland charge, no matter how angry we feel. No need for another Culloden massace, in the middle of a Brexit mist. That is what our enemies would love us to do – charge theough the mist and get wiped out “for a generation”. No, the battle ongoing at present is for the hearts and minds of soft NO voters many of whom are seriously alarmed at the prospect of five years of LBJ. Perception is everything.

On the surface, all seems quiet on the indy front, and the gloating LBJ is standing steady, However, important things are happening, the gears are turning. Lets turn our anger into a stubborn resolve, a steady patience and readiness to strike when our enemies are at their weakest. Trust our leaders – they will know when the time is right. And that time may not be that far away. We must stay strong and be ready. I have always maintained that if we don’t give up, if we just keep going, we will win and win big. The British natioalists would like us to either charge early, or give up and go home. By staying on the field, standing defiantly, ready to battle, we really spook them because sooner or later they will panic and screw up, and when they do, that’s it, game over. We only have to win once. They have to win and keep winning. Stay the course. 🙂

  33. Alasdair Macdonald says:

Thanks to The Dug and its master for this sustained stream of calm and well-argued pieces, not just over this year, but since 2014.

When independence comes he and the other bloggers (Yes, including the volatile Rev Campbell) deserve our sincere gratitude. They provided us with good information to counter the media propaganda and provided us with forums to discuss ideas.

All the best for the festive period and gird our loins for 2020 and, if it has to be, in 2021 or after.

  34. David Agnew says:

Apropos of nothing, I saw a tweet from Laura Kuenssberg that History will judge remainers for having dared to vote against Brexit and campaigning to stop it. How very dare in a democracy no less, have an opinion different to mine.

    • Bob Lamont says:

When History makes it’s more damning judgement on the forces which conspired to hoodwink an entire nation over EU membership and Brexit, perhaps Ms Kuenssberg’s role as “impartial investigative journalist” will feature as a footnote.
The “One Nation” Tory revisionist history she is adopting – It wasn’t ERG who threw spanners in the works, “it was them over there wot dun it” – will come back to haunt her.. Along with the aide punch story, she is digging herself and the Beeb a deeper hole…

  35. Petra says:

    From Richard Murphy.

..”What is remarkable is that sometime soon England will really face the end of its Empire. Northern Ireland and Scotland, at least, will leave the Union. As a political economist it’s impossible not to be fascinated by this. As an observer of the failing English elite it’s as fascinating to watch their failure to come to terms with it, as the FT evidences. For Scotland, at least, it brings hope. For Ireland it’s more complicated. But I believe it too will get there. We live in interesting times.”

  36. Lynn Ross says:

Thanks to all of you for reminding me that cold, intelligent anger wins every time over hot-headed rebellion, even if it takes longer than we’d like.
If I were Mr. Johnson at the moment I would be afraid, very afraid and realise that every condescending response simply makes the anger more powerful.

  37. Matt McCallum says:

I think we now need to think seriously on the Craig Murray route. The guy is an ex ambassador and knows a lot more about this stuff than most of us. See below link.

    https://www.craigmurray.org.uk/archives/2019/12/london-will-never-give-independence-we-must-take-it/

We should never have backed ourselves into the S30 corner as this was legitimizing Westminster’s position of supremacy and our own subservience.

I would also like to see (if we are talking of waiting till 2021) another Scottish independence Party formed and set up to contest the list seats in a Hollyrood election.

WoS has suggested this and did a lot of good investigative groundwork on it. This would have negligible impact to SNP seats and would install another party to hold the SGOV to account.

I would like to see this party formed and funded from the base independence support such as AUOB as the Greens have time and again failed to convince me of their all out support for independence. It always seems to be conditional on something or other.

    • Cubby says:

“If we are talking about waiting till 2021”

Yes let’s all just do what WOS says. Let’s all just do what Craig Murray says. Both of them have diminished credibility because they let their personal ambitions and personal prejudices cloud their judgement.

Let’s just wait till 2021 so WOS can say told you so and set up his party.

Independence in 2020 is what I want. Independence should not jump to the tune of a couple of bloggers – no disrespect meant WGD.

A keen Classics scholar called Boris
Well versed in both Virgil and Horace
    But each ill-judged quote
    Got stuck in his throat
Then exited via his rear ‘oris.

    • Bob Lamont says:

Saw what you did there with the first and last lines, couldn’t find a rhyme for arsehole could you 🤣

  39. Stuart Murray says:

Being angry and patient is the right combination.

  40. steelewires says:

I regret that you are accepting the contradictory views of the SNP mandarins; 1. The People of Scotland are Sovereign in Scotland, 2. The Westminster Parliament is sovereign and the People of Scotland must have its permission to become independent. I suggest you read the post on Craig Murray’s blog.
