2021 will be the year that Scotland takes back control

The Tories have pretty much admitted that opponents of independence are going to lose the next Scottish independence referendum. Asked by the Daily Rocket, sorry, Record, whether they’d participate in an advisory referendum held by Holyrood following a court ruling that an advisory referendum without a section 30 order was legal, a spokesauthoritarian for The Scottish Tories said that their party would boycott the vote. Obviously, you don’t announce that you’re going to boycott a vote if you believe that you’ve got a good chance – or even a realistic chance, of winning it. You only announce that you are going to boycott a ballot when you think that you’re going to lose it and you are desperate to do what you can to delegitimise the result. It’s the political equivalent of bursting the baw when you realise that you’re going to lose the match. That’s the Tories for you, when they cannot win the argument they don’t have the grace to admit that the people have abandoned them, instead they abandon democracy.

However although the Tories will be calling on opponents of independence not to vote and will not officially take part in the campaign, you can be quite certain that they and their hypocritical allies in the overwhelmingly anti independence Scottish media won’t desist from a constant barrage of scare stories and threats which will be uncritically amplified and broadcast by the BBC and most of the Scottish press. That same press and BBC will also do their utmost to aid the Tories and reduce turnout by constantly telling everyone in Scotland that even if you do support independence , voting is pointless because Westminster won’t recognise the result.

Under such circumstances, where opponents of independence say that they are not going to vote, there’s going to be little doubt that Yes will end up with the largest share of the vote, so the main task for the independence movement will be to work to maximise voter participation and to increase turnout as much as possible in order to place the result beyond dispute. So, purely as an illustrative example, if turnout is 55% and there’s a Yes vote of 90% (which is not unfeasible if opponents of independence don’t vote at all), then even if No voters had voted they would still have lost. It’s harder for us certainly, but not impossible.

It is entirely likely that support for independence and the SNP will increase on current levels once the UK exits the EU transitional period either into the chaos of no deal or with a threadbare deal cobbled together at the last minute. That pro-independence majority will only be boosted even further if Johnson is foolish enough to refuse to agree to a Section 30 order following the election of a pro-independence majority to Holyrood next year. A union which refuses to allow the people of Scotland to decide for themselves whether and when they want an independence referendum is no union at all, and will be rejected by a large majority of the people of Scotland. Johnson’s cant about once in a generation is just that. No political party which claims to be democratic can bind the electorate to a promise that a politician from another party may or may not have made. Even among the Tories more sensible voices acknowledge that ‘just saying no’ is not sustainable.  The popular anger generated by a Johnson regime which has imposed Brexit on Scotland refusing to agree to a Section 30 order will boost support for independence to such an extent that it will guarantee that even a Conservative boycott will not be enough to call the outcome of an independence referendum into doubt.

A convincing victory in this referendum needs to be followed through however. Upon the announcement of a yes result which is beyond reasonable doubt, The SNP needs to immediately make it its job to use every arcane rule and regulation in the House of Commons playbook to bring the business of the British government grinding to a halt. They must be disruptive, they should ignore the gentleman’s agreements upon which the Westminster parliament depends and become a constant thorn in the flesh of Johnson and the Tories until they agree to begin independence negotiations. The Scottish Government should cease to co -operate with UK government departments. This should be combined with a mass campaign in Scotland of peaceful civil disobedience. If the Conservatives refuse to allow the people of Scotland to govern Scotland, then the people of Scotland need to make it their goal to ensure that the Conservatives can’t govern Scotland.

This strategy has the best chance of success if at every step along the way we ensure that we retain majority support. That means we can’t cut corners. It means first making that demand for a section 30 order and seeing it refused.

Conservative denial of Scottish democracy by refusing a Section 30 order and planning to boycott a lawful referendum held under the auspices of the Scottish Parliament will provide ample political legitimacy in the eyes of soft yes voters and undecideds for a plebiscite election in which pro-indy parties seek a direct mandate for independence itself. Johnson’s consent is not required for this to be lawful. After all, if the British government has demonstrated that it’s going to ignore the key mandate given to the Scottish Parliament by the voters of Scotland – then what is the point of a devolved parliament? It will be far harder for the Conservatives and their allies to boycott a plebiscite election. The key will then be to demonstrate to the international community that there is unarguably majority support in Scotland for independence. The international community is far more likely to accept and recognise the outcome of a Scottish plebiscite election if it sees that the British government has blocked the previously recognised route to a referendum for no other reason than the fact it’s likely to lose the vote. Then a combination of pressure from within Scotland and international opinion can bring Westminster to the negotiating table.

This isn’t going to be easy. The Conservatives and their allies are going to put every obstacle in our way. We will require determination, resolve, and plenty of that pig-headedness that Scottish people possess in abundance. But in the longer term the Tories cannot win – and they know that too.

A huge thank you to everyone who contributed to the crowdfunder. Thanks to you we have now had an offer accepted for a fully accessible new home and are aiming at moving in towards the end of January. So I won’t be blogging much over the next few weeks as we need to get everything packed up for the big move. Although my recovery is going far better than I could have dared hope, my mobility is still quite limited and I am experiencing issues with post-stroke fatigue so it takes me much longer to manage everyday tasks, and then I have a day or two when I am completely wiped out and just need to lie on the sofa and do nothing.

My walking is improving. I’m able to get about indoors without the walking stick, but am still dependent on it outdoors. I still need a wheelchair if I need to get further than a few dozen metres, but as my strength and stamina improve I should need it less and less. I am also noticing some minor issues with forgetfulness, but am told that this should also improve over the coming months. It’s already a lot better than it was, in the days after the stroke I was losing entire days – which was alarming and distressing. I  still also have some issues with hemianopia – a lack of awareness of what’s going on in the left hand side of my visual field, but this is also improving. It’s now very mild and scarcely a problem at all.

One of the biggest problems I am still experiencing is a lack of sensation and feeling on the left hand side of my body. I’m now able to waggle my fingers and some movement has returned to my thumb, but my grip is extremely weak and I struggle to pick anything up because I can’t feel if I have a grasp of it or not. However it’s still early days – only two months since the stroke when I was completely paralysed down the left hand side, and there is still plenty of potential for further improvement, so you can be sure that come hell or high water I’ll be playing a full and active role in the campaign that’s ahead of us in 2021 it’s going to be a much better year than 2020.

So in the meantime let’s all enjoy this Christmas and New Year. We’ve all go so much to look forward to in 2021 – let’s make it Scotland’s year. Johnson and the Tories are boasting that they’ve taken back control, now it’s our turn.

I think this sums up Boris Johnson and his EU deals, first the WA (the impossible leap) then the Trading agreement (call the ambulance). Not a cliff edge but a bumping ride to the bottom.

‘This Brexit deal is emphatically nothing to celebrate:- We have traded real influence for an empty husk of sovereignty.’

..”For many people this will be a moment of profound sadness. Never has a government expended so much time, energy and money on making its people poorer. But it is not just about the economy. This deal doesn’t simply augur the certainty of reduced prosperity but reduced opportunity. The right to work, travel, settle and love in 27 other countries uninhibited. The diminution of cultural interaction and global influence. The ability to call the rest of Europe home. In return, we gain an empty husk of sovereignty, an arbitrary concept from the 18th century divorced from the reality of how we live—and with no concrete evidence of popular support.”

If I refresh this page, my browser automatically downloads the pdf EU_Membership_benefits_two_columns.pdf without me clicking the link.

That’s when using Edge, doesn’t happen with Firefox.

It’s really annoying, I just posted the above message and again have now downloaded that same pdf for the 5th time as it happens everytime I refresh.

I’ve just downloaded it again, I think it is a bug in the browser which looks like a potential security risk to me as no browser should be downloading files without input from the user. I’ll try googling for an answer.

I don’t know where they got their Ouija board but it’s definitely knackered, pretty much like the twisted garbage spewed out by these folk falling for one individuals crystal clear personal hate agenda

I’m away back to my Christmas, peace and goodwill to you all

    • Capella says:

Bad Dr Jim – you made me go and look. It’s very sad IMO. What was once a powerful tool of the independence movement has sunk to being a tool of the unionists. I guess the hacks of the MSM visit daily to pick up talking points.
Now back to my peaceful and – so far – happy Xmas. 🙂

  11. Hamish100 says:

    Dr Jim,

It is unbelievable. To win independence we must not vote for the SNP!

I am not a clairvoyant but I predict that will not work.

For others they seem to forget that it was Alex Salmond that placed Nicola Sturgeon as leader. Was he wrong or was he right? He lost the referendum and stood down which was an honourable act.

    SNP is the only choice.

  12. I note that Linesman Dross took time out from scanning the 1500 (?) pages of His Master’s Deal to run the line at the Ross County game today.
The man has no sensibility at all, has he?
What about the Jock Brexit ‘Fish and chips’ dilemma, as James Cook summarised so inanely on Christmas Eve?

In the most important 9 days in Brit politics since the war, this wee money grubber not only takes time out from his ‘day job’, but also spends Boxing Day away from his family when he clearly doesn’t need the money.

He’ll be voting to betray his fishing and agriculture communities next Wednesday, sight unseen?

It is clear that they know that Scottish Independence is inevitable now.

    • And what is BBC North Korea showing right now, at the height of this Peace On Earth Season of Good will?
      Fucking Dunkirk.
The last historic Brexit? They Beat the Krauts then didn’t they?
God help England. It is being run by 1984 Mad Men.

      • JoMax says:

Was that not when ‘England stood alone’? Thing is, she’s about to stand alone for real but this time nobody’s going to give a damn.

      • Statgeek says:

Dunkirk – Where they ran away and left the 51st Highland Division to face capture.
        or
Blitz Spirit – Where they hid underground, and the ones that survived said “thank f**k”.
        or
The Charge of the Light Brigade – The most futile cavalry charge known.
        or
Zulu – Where 150 or so Brits held off against many similar sized waves, after 1,300 Brits had been killed at Isandlwana (but we don’t talk about that).

Yes, all the great movies and things to celebrate are defeats, or there was a defeat thereabouts.

Even the Falklands was based on UK Gov stupidity. Who ever thought that 35 men (70 due to platoons changing over at time of invasion) was a sufficient force to prevent invasion? Wouldn’t it have been nicer to have a company there, and two at the time of invasion? Maybe 2-3 aircraft? A couple of old tanks? They practically invited the Argies to have a go, and got 900 men killed, and two and a half thousand injured; most at sea, or in non-land battle events. Just a waste.

But it’s great flag flying for future events. Wonderful material for people who were at none of these places, and took no part in any battle or event of that nature.

        • It has clearly been picked to be shown this week end to time with Johnson’s Victory In Europe, to invoke the ‘Dunkirk Spirit’, where a flotilla of Southern English small boats and craft headed over to Johnny Furriner land to ‘rescue’ Our Boys’, bring them back ‘home’, (England) to go again, and defeat the Huns.Krauts. Nassis.

During Christmas week end, and England locked down, Johnson and his Fascist Regime wave, not one piece of ‘Peace in Our Time’ Paper in the air, like Chamberlain, not Churchill, before him, but 1300 pieces of paper, which The Linesman Dross won’t read because he is ‘moonlighting’ as an SFA Official, but vote through regardless of the pain suffering and loss his support for this terrible Deal will have on his constituencies, and the small son he tucked in to his Unionist cot tonight.

Little England is a military Junta; a fascist regime which intends to crush Scotland….
Their tiresome military pomp ceremony and veiled threats to Scots is there for all to see.
          We have no alternative.
WE take our country back now.
Can you imagine Mike Rumbles poring through this bumph?

“I have to tell you now that no such undertaking has been received, and that consequently this country is at war with Germany.”

That’s the BBC Message to England, not tidings of comfort and joy.

          • On BBC I Player, they have the sub heading for ‘Dunkirk’, ‘Survival is Victory’. to add to “WAR IS PEACE”, “FREEDOM IS SLAVERY”, “IGNORANCE IS STRENGTH”.

England has morphed in to Airstrip One, and nearly half a century of EU membership shoved down Ingsoc’s Memory Hole.

I await the Scottish Government’s Declaration of Independence now.

  13. Arthur Thomson says:

Thank goodness the general public have more sense than the pundits.

Nicola has been, is and will continue to be a star.

It’s little wonder the pundits don’t like her. Each of them has their own motives for wanting to destroy her, none of which motives matters a toss because they are not going to succeed.

The single contribution they make – and It’s value is not to be underestimated – is that their attacks on her galvanize her public support.

So pump up the volume guys, all publicity is good publicity.

  14. Statgeek says:

Just came across this, via a site that doesn’t play well with this one. A tweeted reply from my MP to an invite to AUOB discussions.

That’s me off the fence regarding Nicola et al. I met you at one of your local introductions in Glenrothes. I wasn’t impressed, but the alternative was Scottish Labour (the party that stifled debate, and ignored external advice – notice the trend?).

Now we have other options. I’m taking one of them. As we saw in 2015, huge majorities disappear when the people bother to judge the incumbent. We’ll have Indy; with or without the SNP.

    • Nice try, but no cigar, statgeek.
There can be no referendum without a scottish Government taking the lead.
In other words, stick to ‘the site that doesn’t pa;y well here’, your spiritual home.
Don’t vote for the SNP…which you intended all along…

Delay independnence until Nikla is nailed to the cross?
Jesu Christos…tired old toss from the Rev?
      No that’s it. Dun talking.
We are not going to ‘debate’ how pointless the SNP party is on here.
      Are you Iain Macwhirter?
      Go away.

      • Statgeek says:

        Jack.

Who made you forum manager? I’ll speak as I please and have no one silence me. You’re obviously the opposite end of the Spectrum to the Rev, and both of you are welcome to each other. Both stifling debate from the other.

The post stands, and I’ll stick around to criticise any politician (my MP!!) I see fit.

    • Dr Jim says:

Peter Grant wasn’t wrong, this is a mischaracterisation of what was meant, no political parties of any colour discuss policy or planning with dispirit collections of people at random no matter who they say they represent and with respect to JJSeparatist 3.5% my guess is they probably know that

Political parties formulate their own plans then put them to the people to vote on once they’ve taken advice from their own sources amongst the people they represent, again with respect to AUOB they are not all the people nor do they represent the whole of the Independence movement at large, there are far more Independence minded people who will vote for the proposition sat at home waiting to do it than have anything to do with a bunch of folk who claim to represent people

As to gaining Independence in truth it cannot be achieved any other way than politically and that means the SNP, they are the only recognised political party in Scotland supporting the proposition, I fear there are too many people who believe that somehow because they support Independence it follows that they own the right to tell the SNP what to do then communicating that by way of twitter, that kind of behaviour is a stunt to gain attention for themselves and worthy of the author of website that invents and creates suspicion in order to achieve chaos and the opposite of Independence so he can prosper on the result

Peter Grant probably knew who and where this came from and sensibly wanted nothing to do with it, who’s next to demand talks with the SNP, dog walkers for Independence, the tall people club, the bring back Alex Salmond loser squad ? Now who would think that up I wonder, somebody who has tried desperately to involve himself and influence Scottish politics but really should be dumped down a deep dark disused well somewhere

    • yesindyref2 says:

I thought Grant was a bit of an arse with his reply, all he had to say was “no thanks” or even ignore it as the others did (inlcuding Cherry). He was “invited” directly by a twitter activist (JJ Sep etc.), not AUOB. He’s probably aiming it at McNeil and McEleny, but he’s out of order doing so – there’s an NEC to take care of that if neccessary, he’s just an MP sameas McNeil – or Wishart.

AUOB though are close to the wind of forgetting their own title “All Under One Banner”, by taking one side not another with the Plan B and Section 30 thing. SNP can fit under one braod church banner, same as SSP and all others. But not if AUOB start to be too political partyish. They were already a bit too socialist left-wing, with banners scattered throughout marches and the cry “Tory Tory Tory out out out”, all about Westminster politics whereas the rest of us were about Indy and getting away from Westminster.

The “temporarily named” YES Alba are another example of divisiveness – first they steal an existing groups’s name and havcen’t done anything to recrify that in a whole month, and secondly the triumvirate are not the most “broad church” people you’d contemplate.

But if the SNP don’t get an overall majority in May 2021, we can kiss bye-bye to Independence in my lifetime – and yours no matter what age you are. And if it takes even just 4 seats on the List, then that’s what’s needed to give Indy a chance.

      • Alex Clark says:

Pretty much how I see it too, AUOB, I believed was for Indy supporters of any and all opinions.

Left wing, right wing, no wing at all or not even interested in politics, whatever your views were, they didn’t matter. The only requirement was that you supported Independence.

Remaining politically neutral, I would’ve thought to be an asset when trying to bring different groups with different views together All Under One Banner in support of a single cause, Independence.

    • Legerwood says:

Perhaps that explains in small part why the UK Gov wanted rid of it.

    • Capella says:

That really does put the Erasmus scheme in context – Winnie Ewing created it so it must go. Despicable.

      • Petra says:

Oh well let’s hope that their actions in allowing students in NIreland to access Erasmus but not Scottish students backfires on them. Backfires and sees support for independence rise even further amongst that age group and that they in turn work to get their older (no voting) relatives onside 😀 .

‘More than two-thirds of young Scots now back independence.’

..”An analysis of all the latest polls suggests that those aged 16-34 overwhelmingly support independence, with some polls putting the support for Yes as nearly three in every four.”..

More than two-thirds of young Scots now back independence (newstatesman.com)

      • Legerwood says:

        Capella,
To be fair I think there were a fair few ‘midwives’ involved in the birth of this scheme and its precursors but Winnie Ewing was certainly to the fore at the birth.

  15. Dr Jim says:

Remember folks if you didn’t vote for Brexit you’re not British according to the Union party because each time it’s mentioned that Scotland voted against Independence by a large majority we’re immediately told that the *British* people voted and that’s an end to it, so a pretty clear and obvious statement of who Scottish people are considered not to be

52% – 48% The British win for Brexit, 62% – 38% win for No Brexit Scotland, so in percentage terms Scotland was decisive in its view in respect of the advisory Brexit referendum showing once again that had Scotland been an equal country in terms of population not only would Scotland have diverted Brexit we’d never have even had a vote on it in the first place because the SNP would surely have had the right to have been the government of the UK, would they not?

Can you imagine England tolerating Scotland as the UK ruling party, now you know why our population was deliberately suppressed so that neither Scotland or Wales could ever be allowed to be in charge of our *preciousss equal *country* Union UK of Britain

Scotland and Wales are not smaller in population by some strange anomalous accident or because all the foreign folk in the world who immigrated to the British Isles just didn’t like us or want to live in our *regions*, why did the UK guv make certain to retain control of immigration

So Scottish people are not British, the UK doesn’t like us or our choices, they say they financially support us yet still they demand control over our country and its assets, so what is it about all these things Union supporters in Scotland don’t want to understand, are they hoping that the majority of us will just go away so that the 25% of Tory Unionists have the place to themselves which obviously couldn’t work at all financially or are they hoping for the ultimate solution

The Jewish people could tell them a thing or two about what they think of that idea, it’s not just religious or ethnic minorities who attract oppression, you just have to think differently or disagree with the *right* people, and Scots are not the *right people*

    • Dr Jim says:

First para, I meant to say “voted against Brexit* my poor aching head let me down there

    • Bob Lamont says:

“52% – 48% The British win for Brexit, 62% – 38% win for No Brexit Scotland” is from the landscape of 2016.
Despite the UK media promoting the Tally-ho brigade’s “taking back control” message, many minds will have been changed over the many months since as reality sunk in, those behind Brexit knew they’d pulled off a “coup” and dodged retesting the question like the plague, knowing they’d never pull it off a second time.
The money-men are the only real beneficiaries from Brexit, but is the rest of England prepared for what now follows ? I very much doubt it.
For Scots these are but “parcel of rogues” reborn, but this time we get a say, it’s called “democracy”, and we’re off.

      • Jackson Carlaw will resign over Erasmus; The Linesman Dross and Second Lieutenant Bowiewill resign over the betrayal of Fishing; B-Lister ‘Union’ Jack and Mundo the Mighty will leave over seed potato betrayal, and John Lamont will demand that the A1 be upgraded to M Way status…..

The Fall of the House of England…

There is no alternative. We take our country back now, not May 21.

  16. Arthur Thomson says:

I am Scottish, not British. I have always been Scottish not British and I always will be.

The British are the predatory elements on these islands who must have it all. Sharing is a concept they never learned. Taking, owning, exploiting and diminishing are their values. Their power derives from being without conscience and they have whipped large numbers of people into line by coercive control; people who have internalized the British identity for fear of being annihilated by the predatory elements. I call it the cringe.

The only remedy lies in a substantial majority of Scots confronting their fear and openly rejecting British identity. That process is well underway.

All this stuff about how independence is achieved is just white noise. People like Nicola, Jeane, Joanna, Philippa, Kate etc. just cut through this noise and make good things happen while more Scots find their self belief. The pundits get more hysterical as every day goes by and their hysteria is ignored.

But as I have often said, the hysterical crap out out by the pundits is useful in keeping the issue of independence controversial without using up SNP resources. Most of it is bullshit -John Bull shit – but so long as we don’t give it any credence it won’t delay our progress.

We are winning a war against vast odds. Like all the other nations who have thrown off the British yoke, we are finding it an uphill struggle – held back by elements of our own people who have assimilated into the British culture of greed. Like those other nations we will prevail.

  17. jfngw says:

The biggest lot of pish I read is from those who claim the SNP could have done a deal with Theresa May and gotten their referendum. It is absolute bollocks, it’s less less based in reality than Chamberlain’s signed letter from AH. I can only imagine how this would have been spun if they had tried this and TM had publicly rejected them, they would have looked like complete idiots, lacking in any political acumen.

These people are now promoting a piece of Iain Macwhirter nonsense (one of his many) that effectively the Brexit deal is the SNP’s fault, they are siding with him over Philips Whitford, who described the column as ‘tosh’. Of course this TM arrangement is one of the ‘Wangs’ and his acolytes sermons, he who is infallible, no doubt looking for a promotion from Rev (although I fear with Rev he is in the wrong calling for this).

    • Mc Kenna and Macwhirter are just writing any old click bait (or should that be ‘bate’) nonsense now.
They are clinging on to their Brit Nat funded jobs…
The Dead Tree Scrolls, like Brit Nat BBC/STV will frizzle up and die, come independence. Who under 40 buys ‘paper. these days?

The Dead Tree Scrolls: ancient superstitions written on papyrus which crumbles to dust when exposed to the harsh light of truth.
      May ’21 IS the Referendum.

  18. It’s like having Christmas in North Korea down at the Beeb.
Today’s How We Beat the Gerries menu..’The Sound of Music’, on BBC1, and over on two a Triple Decker. A ‘Talking Pictures’ hour on war movies and how they helped boost ‘the nation’s’ (England) morale post WWII.

Then ‘Operation Crossbow’, John Mills, Trevor Howard, Richard Johnson, Tom Courtney, and a cast of English True Grit pipe smoking Stiff Upper Lippers confounding the Krauts’ efforts to develop their flying bomb, followed by Kirk Douglas as a Norwegian confounding the Nasty Germans efforts to build a nuclear device in ‘The Heroes of Telemark’.

BBC ‘doing its bit’ to boost ‘the nation’s’ (England) morale with this barrage of xenophobic trash.

WE have beaten the Krauts again!

Hip Hip Hoorah for Prime Minister Johnson.

God help the 40 million souls in England who didn’t elect to Leave the EU.

I can only imagine how Germans living in the UK feel right now.

That there is history don’t you know Jack. Even as a wee boy I could see that it was shite. Who in God’s name is watching it now? Just the same geriatrics that have watched it all their lives. People who never grew up, they just got old. You would think they would be embarrassed by it by this time but they don’t have enough brain cells to experience embarrassment.

  21. Capella says:

For once Douglas Fraser spells out how brutal the trade deal is when it comes to fishing rights.
Gutted: Europe’s fishing deal with the UK
UK gets very modest increases in share of fish we rarely catch – saithe and Norwegian pout anyone?
UK gets an increase in cod catch but only 10% in North Sea – few Scotchmen will eat cod – a wormy fish sold mostly to English fish and chip shops.
UK gets modest increase in herring, mackerel and whiting – most of which we export to – guess who? – EU.

    But the penalties are draconian:

First, they would block access for UK boats in EU waters. Then they would introduce tariffs on fishery products. And if that’s not proportionate to the “economic and societal impact”, they would introduce tariffs on other goods.

If that still isn’t commensurate, they have a right to suspend the whole trade deal, and include in that the reciprocal agreement on road transport.

‘Will the trade deal make Scottish independence easier or harder?’

”Scottish independentistas have been fairly positive towards the new EU-UK trade deal so far. Their line of thinking seems that the lack of tariffs means there won’t be any restrictions between an independent Scotland and the rUK, and so Westminster won’t be able to play its Project Fear card about erecting a physical border between the nations this time. I’m afraid reality is slightly more complicated than this, however.”..
