What democracy is all about

democracyissimple

“You don’t get a referendum for free, you have to earn it. So if the Greens and the SNP – and the SSP or any other parties who’ve declared an interest in independence – get over the line and make a coalition, make a majority, get the votes in the parliament, then they’ll vote through a referendum, and that’s what democracy’s all about … it is perfectly simple.”
Ruth Davidson, May 2011

Ruth Davidson has changed her tune. If you’re surprised by that you’re probably also surprised that British TV sports commentators keep hyping up the England team and patronising the Scotland team when they notice it at all. After saying that “of course” Westminster shouldn’t block another independence referendum, Ruth is now basing her choice of Tory leadership candidate on the basis of which of them most vehemently refuse to allow Scotland to ask itself about its own future within the UK. She’s changed her tune on an independence referendum just like she’s changed her tune on Brexit.

Yesterday, the leaderene of the Ruth Davidson Vote Ruth Davidson for More Ruth Davidson party insisted that there could only be another independence referendum if Nicola Sturgeon got a majority in Holyrood in the next Scottish elections. Other pro-independence parties don’t count any more. Green MSPs don’t exist. Ruth thinks that Scottish democracy is an arm wrestling contest between her and Nicola Sturgeon.

The perfect simplicity of democracy is that it doesn’t matter whether Nicola Sturgeon has a personal mandate for another independence referendum. What matters is that there’s a majority for one in the Scottish Parliament, which there is. However democracy has ceased to be simple for Ruth Davidson. Despite the fact that her party came a distant fourth in the most recent elections held in Scotland, she still thinks that she has the right to dictate to the Scottish Government and the people of Scotland. Despite the fact that the SNP and the Greens have indeed made a majority, have got the votes in the parliament, have voted through a referendum, that’s not good enough for Ruth despite what she said in May 2011.

Quite simply Ruth Davidson needs show us the electoral majority that she has won that gives her the right to be the arbiter of whether or not there should be a Scottish independence referendum. Oh yeah, it doesn’t exist. Her party came fourth in the EU elections. All the opinion polls point to it being wiped out in Scotland should there be a General Election. She’s hardly in any position to lecture anyone from a position of strength. There are sand castles on a beach in a hurricane which have greater structural integrity. Frankly, the only people who care about her setting the conditions necessary for another independence referendum are her pals in the press. And even most of them are only reporting her for the click bait.

The truth is that Ruth Davidson has changed her position on the referendum so often, that even if the SNP did indeed achieve an absolute majority in the next Holyrood election, she would only find some other reason for saying no. Because Ruth’s word is worth as much as Ross Thomson’s career prospects. It’s not so much that she has a history of shifting the goalposts, but that she keeps the goalposts on the back of a flatbed lorry which is currently bombing down the A1 in the direction of Conservative Central Office.

This latest hurdle is just another convenient excuse, and once it’s superceded like previous hurdles have been superceded, she’ll just find another. It will be that even though the SNP has a majority of seats, it doesn’t have a majority of votes cast. It will be that there can’t be another independence referendum because Mars hasn’t aligned with Uranus. She’ll say there can’t be another independence referendum because David Mundell is having his beard de-morselled. She’ll tell us that another independence referendum is out of the question because, just because. Foot stamp. Sulk. Pout. Don’t wannaaaaa!

Ruth Davidson preaches about democracy while espousing deeply undemocratic positions. She preaches about the dangers of division while her own party has proven to be the most dangerously divisive force in the UK. She rails against the replacement of patriotism by nationalism while representing the most narrowly and viciously nationalist party that has ever been in government in Britain.

Her own party is a minority government, and is hell bent on forcing the most extreme form of Brexit imaginable on the UK. Yet have you heard her say that the British government can’t foist its Brexit upon us all until it achieves an electoral majority to do so? No. Neither have I. Theresa May went to the polls in 2017 in order to seek a larger majority in the Commons so that she could determine all by herself what sort of hard Brexit she wanted. She lost her majority, but no one heard supposedly pro-remain Ruth Davidson speak up to say that the UK government had lost its right to pursue a hard Brexit. The support of Green MSPs in Holyrood for another independence referendum doesn’t count as far as Ruth is concerned, but the DUP’s support for a hard Brexit in Westminster is just fine with her. Funny that.

The lack of respect for Scottish democracy displayed by Ruth Davidson is merely a reflection of the lack of respect for democracy that is displayed by her party in Westminster. This is a party which has leading contenders for leadership who are perfectly happy to close down parliament in order to ram through a disastrous no deal Brexit that there is no majority for either in the Commons or in the UK as a whole. They’re happy to do so in order to further the narrow and short term political prospects of the Conservative party, irrespective of the consequences on the economy, on the UK’s international standing, on lives, jobs, and prospects.

Ruth Davidson doesn’t have the strength, the courage, the conviction, the arguments, to persuade a majority of Scotland by herself, so she prefers to go running to Tory leadership candidates for hauners, candidates who will tell Scotland what they will or will not “allow”. You can bet that as soon as her current favoured candidate drops out of the race, she’ll find another who is equally intransigent and claim she supported him all along. Ruth is a blustering bully who is desperately flailing about because she knows that she’s on the wrong side of history, the losing side of the argument. She can see her precious union evaporate away before her eyes, because of the boiling heat that her own party has created due to Brexit.

So how about this Ruth, if you want to block another independence referendum, if you want to ensure that it doesn’t take place, then how about you win a majority in Holyrood. Make a majority. Get the votes in parliament. Vote against a referendum. That’s what democracy is all about. It’s perfectly simple.

Ah Ha, you are using the logic argument, where 2 + 2 = 4

Ruthie is using the stick your fingers in your ears and go NA NA NA NA argument, which occurs every time she is caught out as a numpty. (very common)

  2. How come Ruthie can change her mind but the Scottish people can’t.

  3. Charles McGregor says:

The current leadership contest has entertainingly demonstrated, yet again, that the Tories are truly ruthless. If only we were.

If Ruth’s nemesis does get in, as looks likely, we may very well see that occur.

He seems on course for victory. The adultery, the lying, the ineptitude, the drug taking, the conspiring to physical assault all result in a clear lead from the psycho-hive.

The only thing that could trip him up now would be if it transpired that he had once helped an old lady cross the road or had put a hundred quid in a blind beggar’s bowl or some such act of human decency (unforgivable defect in Tory world).

  4. Frazerio says:

10/10, gold star, top of the class. You’ve produced some beauties Mr K, this is right up there. Thank you.

You put it so simply & concisely, the Greens/DUP comparison/double standards, just perfect.

Next UK PM indeed!!! How does the MSM get away with it? Where did I read the other day she’s lead her party now to 7 or 8 straight election defeats. A serial loser. On a par with Murdo. And still she gets a platform to make up fantasy headlines.

Tory hypocrisy seems to be a core trait. Andrea ‘no 2nd chances to vote’ Leadsom has just been royally rejected AGAIN for the tory leadership. Its ok for her to get a 2nd chance, but obviously not for us plebs.

Not one of the tory leadership candidates will do an ounce of good for ‘unionism’ (British Nationalism) in Scotland. Keep at it, it cant be long now.

  6. Julian Smith says:

Where, exactly, do the Tories have the overall majority that Ruth is demanding that, not even the SNP, but specifically Nicola Sturgeon must have in order to enact policy that was spelled out in a manifesto?

  7. Orri says:

Ironically Ruth has show exactly why Wesminster will never actually shut down Holyrood. It’s the only way to stop a referendum right now. Without it any Wesminster GE where the SNP won the majority of the seats in Scotland would be enough for a referendum. There’d be some gum mumping about percentage of votes but not too loudly as that’d undermine the authority of any government with a lower percentage over the entire UK.

As things stand any Holyrood decision can be stymied by Westminster. It’s not impossible for the SNP to get a majority at Holyrood. I’d expect some move in the near future by Ruth et al to make it even fairer. By “fairer” I mean even harder to get a majority. Even then all that gets you is the right to negotiate and we can see how well that went between the UK and the EU.

    • Illy says:

“Without it any Wesminster GE where the SNP won the majority of the seats in Scotland would be enough for a referendum.”

I think you mean “would be enough to take Scotland independent, because they’d stand on a manifesto that simply reads ‘take Scotland Independent’. Back to Thatcher’s conditions”.

    • Anne Martin says:

“any Wesminster GE where the SNP won the majority of the seats in Scotland would be enough for a referendum”

I expect that would be enough, if spelt out in a manifesto, without a referendum.

      • Andy Anderson says:

Margaret Thatcher stated this in 1986

        • orri says:

And did so assuming Scotland would stick to voting Labour rather than SNP as their “socialist” party of choice. 2020 will be the 700 anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Arbroath. I can’t wait to see what shite Westminster or Scotland’s own unionists come up with to screw over any celebration of that. Probably something about it being a pale imitation of Magna Carta and absolutely not a declaration of the sovereignty, yet to be overturned and upheld just last year, of the people of Scotland as more than just the nobility signed it.

          • Welsh Sion says:

Getting this in early for you, Orri (et al.)

“For, as long as but a hundred of us remain alive and posting on WGD and Wings over Scotland , never will we on any conditions be brought under Westminster rule.

It is in truth not for glory, nor riches, nor honours that we are fighting, but for freedom – for that alone, which no honest man or woman gives up but with life itself.”

Does the Fixed Term Parliament Act apply in Scotland?

  13. Dan Huil says:

Sadly my hatred for the likes of Davidson shows no sign of abating. However, I’ll concentrate on not getting mad but getting independence instead.

    • Pat McKenzie says:

You are a better man than I am Dan Hull, may I be forgiven but my hate for Davidson runs soooo deep that every time I see her or hear her voice my hand involuntarily goes into a fist. I have never in my life felt such a feeling and I am not proud of it but she sure has earned it.

    • Pat McKenzie says:

Apologies Dan Hull not Hull as in my previous reply.

  14. vivianoblivian7 says:

“Ruth’s word is worth as much as RossThompson’s career prospects.”
Steady on that’s our next SoS for Scotland your talking about.

  15. Mboyd says:

The problem with this article is that it gives credence to Ruth. Here we are again debating the pronouncements of a second rate politician. Just ignore her!

    • weegingerdug says:

And the problem with your comment is that ignoring Ruth Davidson is the very last thing that the (overwhelmingly British) media in Scotland is going to do. So what Davidson says needs to be challenged, rebutted, and shown up for the hypocrisy that it is.

      • Robert Harrison says:

And ruth davidson buckles under pressure when challenged as seen many times her most famous one was her storming of when asked about her tory party allied with the dup.

    • Bob Lamont says:

She feeds on publicity and her media buddies are always quick to oblige with maximum coverage, but as Paul highlighted, lies and hypocrisy must be exposed whomever it is. The UK is in it’s current calamitous state because unchallenged lies and hypocrisy mutated to accepted fact.
It was heartening to see her hypocrisy called out not only here, but on web comments pages (once past the usual army of ScotGov/SNP vitriol), but what is a first to me is a Davidson piece dropped within 24 hours by the Beeb from Featured. The article is down in Updates being fed bile by the Basher Army, but preumably her Beeb buddies saw her early drubbing in comments and demoted the bad publicity… So much for balance.

  16. Terry callachan says:

And so say all of us.

Commonly people think there is no chance at all of the British army and the police being ever being used to enforce England’s rejection of a majority vote in Scotland for Scottish independence in a Scottish independence referendum but they are wrong very wrong and the reason Westminster will give for rejecting the referendum result will be be that referendums are only advisory and the Westminster parliament has taken note but rejected the idea of Scottish independence because it’s not best for “ the people of Britain” , that is what they will do , it’s predictable, you just have to view the history of Westminster politics to see the development that has given us the undemocratic poisonous parliament that rules with an iron fist over the UK and some other parts of the world.

  17. Bob Lamont says:

Not sure if my international version accords with what you guys are seeing there, but all traces of Ruth the Mooth splash on Beeb sites on English politics, Scotland, and Scotland Politics has completely vanished, and I mean, pooof did not exist…. Very, very unusual for MI sorry Auntie Beeb…
If this rewrite of recent history is accurate Paul, grab the Dug, some rations, a blanket for a parachute, and dive out a a back window before Ruthless in her Tank does the old TV detector van routine up the back stairs…
Be grateful if some of those back home can verify what I’m NOT seeing abroad…

  18. Wonderful, Paul.
It is clear that Davidson unfettered uncritical access to the Scottish Media is because they all come from the same social, religious, and political background.
She will be a Baroness by the school holidays.
Jackson Carlaw will take over again.
Davidson is a ‘professional’ after all.
She has an outfit to woo any men or women of Power.
Naughty Nurse, French Maid, Maggie Thatcher Tory Blue Two piece with Lady Di ruff collar blouse and Cairngorm Brooch.
She really wants to be Gillian Anderson, after all.

    • Breaking news: well, heart breaking news for absentee MP Jo Swinson.
Chuka has joined the Lib Dems.

I’d imagine he’s only crossed the floor if he’s guaranteed the leadership.
Still, Swinson will be out on her ear at the next election anyway.

      • Catherine Julie Kerr says:

I read a while ago, that Swinson has LOTS of dark money behind her, dark as in some very rich Lib Dems. Her campaign spent loads of money on promoting her in every home in the constituency of one of he most affluent areas of the West of Scotland, East Dunbartonshire. She is one to watch.

        • Robert Harrison says:

So she won her Westminster seat by dark money lib dems still no different than the conservatives.

        • Catherine, by all reports she was an embarrassment on STV last night.
The interviewer tore her a new ‘Boris’.
The Lib Dems have bagged the ‘English Obama’.
          He’ll be a late entry.
He’ll certainly be pulling the strings.
It seems that she ‘delegates her surgery to a minion.

  19. Robert Graham says:

On Ruthless shes like the background musak in a lift or shopping centre background noise .
A we word of advise to all our MSPs ,treat the toerag party with the respect they deserve , answer every question with a political barb , and to Nicola stop the long detailed answers to that lump to your left ,she aint listening , take the total pish out of her , it dosent take much to wind her up GO for it .

I was working on a eulogy ditty for Theresa May but have only got just over halfway through and events seem to have overtaken it so here it is, incomplete:

  21. Robert Harrison says:

As someone commented on the national website on an article about this even if the greens didnt vote the snp would still out number the yoons they are a majprity while still being a minority government because the snp have 62 msps the english slave trio only come to 59 (60 if you include machintosh) the yoons cant overule the snp minority government without the greens help as shown with the offensive football act. greens was the reason they got it scraped (pratrick havie you fucking dickhead) its not the same as 07 when they could just gang up together to overule the snp no that dont work anymore as you rub out the greens and the snp are basically a majority government.

    • If the Greens really dug their heels in, bless, and threatened to do another OBFA stunt, the SNP Administration should call their No Deal bluff, and disband Parliament and call a SGE.
This could double up as a Referendum on independence.
Declare in the manifesto that a vote for the SNP is also a vote for YES /Independence.
Two plebiscites for the price of one.

    • Alisdair says:

      Great post, thank you.

I’ve just surfed the online Scots Dead Tree Scrolls.
No sight of Ruth in Glasow, Edinburgh, Dundee and Aberdeen Thunderers, anywhere.
She has been completely removed from the ether.
Jackson needs to polish up his Leadership Election Speech.
I note that Trump is about to give the US Prime Minister Johnson his biggest Welcome gift.

Just gave up on the gardening, 32 in the shade is so gratifying when you’re in it, as is a cold beer from the fridge and the mister on under the terrace…
Ruth is obviously reviewing her next gaffe with her media pals as the last one had to be buried, but like shit on a shoe she will come back and get right up your nose…
The Iran propaganda has surely been ramping up, but the latest intel “video” purported to be Iranians rescuing a ship’s crew and removing one of their own unexploded limpet mines is hard to grapple with as proof positive, presumably this will be followed by release of an intercepted apology to the ship’s captain “We thought y’all was American”.. It’s WMD all over again…
Nothing like a war to divert attention from domestic political screwups, St Boris once anointed by the 70k PensionMembers will doubtless immediately declare war on Rockall (Is it not foreign ?)

      • My back is South facing, so when the sun is out today, we’re recording a steamy hot 24%, Bob.

We’re still having to put the heating on at night when it dips to 5-8 degrees, in June.
I keep threatening the family that I’m going to buy an old Camper Van and spend my senior days tootling about Europe, following the sun.
Not one has pleaded with me not to go…
Anyway, on the 1st of November the English Homeland Security won’t let me out of the Scotland Reorientation Camp.
Davidson’s doing what she always does.
When there are awkward questions to answer, she disappears, and her pals at the Beeb and the Dead Tree Scrolls lay off her.
I feel a BBQ coming on this week end.
        ’32 in the shade’? Bassa…

      • Bob Lamont says:

Winter and summer here are very different, -20ish to +45ish, preferable to the maritime environment of the UQ and Ireland, and recognisable seasons. Overnights 17 so no Betty Swallocks searching for a Single Cotton Sheet yet, heating last triggered 19th May, but back to Politics or Ruthlitics as it’s known in Scotland Media.
The “English Homeland Security” jibe however jocular is pertinent. The rightward lurch of the UQ must inevitably promote more draconian interventions including the old chestnut of deploying military to restore “public order”. But with the Army depleted to fractions, 90% of the country pissed off, and only the readership of Mail/Sun/Express not understanding much let alone Scotland’s wish to depart aside the yeh-ok-riddance variety, the writing could be on the wall for UK PLC. This makes them dangerous and desperate…

  23. Sheryl Hepworth says:

Can we please do an ”EVEL” in Holyrood? Can the Scotgov put in place a rule that requires any political party wishing to stand in a Scottish election (local or national) be REGISTERED in SCOTLAND? Why are we allowing parties registered in England to stand in Scotland? UntRuthless keeps going on about autonomy so here’s her chance to set up a proper Scottish Con party. Time to call their bluff I think. Oh nice one Paul how do you keep improving?? Love to the Dug.

  24. Excellent Paul.
Wasn’t so long ago that Davidson was one of the favourites to be a future PM. Probably the practicalities, apart from her complete lack of ability, made it difficult. Obviously, lack of ability is not a drawback to be a candidate in this competition.

    • Iain says:

Lack of ability has never stopped a Tory yet. What Davidson lacks in addition to ability is contacts. It never dawned on the poor dope that the Tory Party will always be the Tory Party. Her type of ‘oik’ is fine for clearing up after those in charge, but don’t expect to be invited into the drawing room for brandies. They tried that with Thatcher and Major and it left them in the wilderness for years. Ms Davidson’s ship sailed in 1997.

  25. Iain says:

Poor Ruth Davidson. Imagine being her and knowing your career peak is behind you. No wonder she’s becoming shrilly repetitive one minute then hiding from view the next.
My advice would be get pregnant again soon. There’s a helluva shitstorm ahead.
